Rove Beetle Control

The Rove Beetle, Paederus sp. is a feared and hazardous insect due to the toxin present in its hemolymph. This insect belongs to the Order Coleoptera and Family Staphylinidae. It has a dark orange body with a black head and black abdominal tip. When disturbed, the Rove Beetle typically raises its abdomen like a scorpion. Even though it can fly, it prefers to run.

As a nocturnal insect, the Rove Beetle is attracted to brightly lit areas and multi-story buildings. This is due to its phototactic behavior, which causes it to gather around artificial light sources at night, whether in forests or urban areas. Adult beetles often leave their nests and are drawn to human habitats by lights. Their lifespan ranges from 51 to a maximum of 80-90 days.

Although the Rove Beetle does not sting or bite, it secretes a toxin called ‘paederin’, which can cause Paederus Dermatitis (PD) upon contact with human skin. Paederin is highly toxic, causing allergic reactions, red rashes, and severe pain in affected individuals. In some cases, PD can leave visible scarring as it penetrates deeper skin layers.
